Shelly Pro LoRa Add-on – Long-Range Communication for Shelly Pro Devices

Extend your smart automation with the Shelly Pro LoRa Add-on. Designed for compatible Shelly Pro devices, this galvanically isolated add-on delivers LoRa communication over distances of up to 5 km, depending on local conditions.

From remote irrigation systems and street lighting to warehouses and facility equipment, the Shelly Pro LoRa Add-on helps connect installations where conventional connectivity is difficult to achieve.

The SMA antenna connector lets you position the included antenna outside a metal enclosure or connect a compatible higher-gain antenna to improve coverage. Support for custom scripts gives you the flexibility to configure communication for your specific automation needs.

Frequency version: EU868. This model operates in the 863–870 MHz antenna frequency range. Confirm regional suitability before purchasing.

Key Features

  • Up to 5 km communication range: Extend connectivity with an external antenna. Actual range depends on terrain, obstructions, antenna placement and local conditions.
  • Flexible antenna positioning: Use the SMA connector to extend the antenna outside an enclosure or connect a compatible antenna upgrade.
  • Shelly Pro integration: Connects to supported host devices through Shelly’s proprietary serial interface.
  • Encrypted communication: Built-in AES-CCM encryption with unicast, multicast and broadcast addressing through the Shelly Protocol.
  • Custom scripting: Tailor functionality to suit your installation and automation requirements.
  • EU868 low-power mode: Supports continuous communication without duty-cycle limitations when operating in the supported low-power mode.
  • Galvanic isolation: Provides electrical isolation between the host device and the add-on.
  • DIN rail mounting: Designed for organised installation alongside compatible Shelly Pro equipment.
  • Communication indicators: Separate LEDs show received and transmitted data.

Practical Applications

  • Street lighting: Connect compatible lighting controls across distributed installations for scheduling, monitoring and fault notifications.
  • Agriculture and irrigation: Control pumps, sprinklers and lighting across remote fields using suitable connected equipment and automation logic.
  • Parking facilities: Coordinate lighting schedules and activity-based control with compatible devices and sensors.
  • Warehouses: Connect lighting zones and supported monitoring equipment across larger premises.
  • Remote facilities: Automate equipment schedules and communicate status updates from pumps, lighting and power systems.

Suitable for residential installations, multi-dwelling buildings, commercial premises, municipal projects, campuses and farms. Available switching, dimming, energy monitoring and sensor functions depend on the connected host devices and system configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why is my Shelly device not recognising the Shelly Pro LoRa Add-on?

Please check the following:

  • The add-on is securely mounted on a compatible Shelly Pro host device.
  • The host device is running firmware version 2.0 or later.
  • The add-on is properly connected to the Shelly proprietary serial interface.

2. Does every Shelly device need its own Pro LoRa Add-on?

Each device communicating directly over LoRa needs a compatible LoRa add-on. However, a compatible Shelly Pro device with a Pro LoRa Add-on can act as a gateway, collecting data from other devices through supported connections and forwarding it over LoRa.

For example, the host can collect Bluetooth data from Shelly BLU devices, such as the BLU H&T, and transmit that data over LoRa. This requires custom scripting.

For a straightforward setup, equip each compatible Shelly Pro device that needs direct LoRa communication with its own Pro LoRa Add-on.

3. Is communication limited to a one-to-one connection?

No. The Shelly Pro LoRa Add-on supports one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one and multiple-transmitter/multiple-receiver configurations.

You need at least one transmitter and one receiver. For reliable communication:

  • Avoid having multiple transmitters send at the same time, as this can cause radio collisions.
  • Use matching LoRa settings across communicating add-ons, including frequency, bandwidth and spreading factor.

4. Can I still use the standard functions of my Shelly Pro device?

Yes. The host device can operate as a LoRa communication point while continuing to perform its standard local control functions.

5. What is LoRa Spreading Factor (SF), and which setting should I use?

Spreading Factor controls the balance between communication range, transmission speed and airtime:

  • Lower SF, such as SF7: Faster transmissions and shorter airtime, generally with less range.
  • Higher SF, such as SF12: Greater range, but slower transmissions and longer airtime.

For a group of communicating devices, choose a setting that reliably reaches the farthest device and apply matching settings across the group. Longer airtime reduces how frequently messages can be transmitted within applicable limits.

6. Why has my Pro LoRa Add-on stopped transmitting even though the receiver is nearby?

The LoRa Safety Stop may have temporarily paused transmission because the transmission-time threshold was reached. This can happen even when the sender and receiver are close together.

EU868 transmission limits depend on the operating sub-band and mode. The Safety Stop helps protect against excessive transmissions caused by misconfiguration, faulty scripts or unintended repeated messages.

  • The Safety Stop activates when 25% of the recommended hourly transmission time is reached.
  • Further transmissions are temporarily blocked, regardless of the distance to the receiver.
  • Transmission resumes automatically as accumulated hourly usage falls below the permitted threshold.

If this happens repeatedly, review your script’s transmission frequency and spreading factor. Higher spreading factors use more airtime per message.

7. Can Shelly LoRa Add-ons and Shelly Pro LoRa Add-ons communicate with each other?

Yes, provided they use matching LoRa configurations, including the same frequency, bandwidth and spreading factor.
