Took me a minute to set up, issues on my end. Once it's working it's excellent
Doesn't work at all. Can't hear me. Can't understand my voice. Doesn't work without speaking almost directly at it.
Thank you for your feedback.
Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve issues where your Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition (“Voice PE”) can't hear you, doesn’t understand your voice, or only responds when you're speaking right next to it:
1. Microphone & Wake Word Sensitivity
Many users report that the Voice PE only responds when speaking very close — often less than 1 meter away — and sometimes only in loud tones. This behavior may be due to hardware limitations of the XMOS chip and the built-in microphone array.
https://community.home-assistant.io/t/home-assistant-voice-preview-edition-weak-mic/814551/5
Some solve this by switching to custom wake-word systems like openwakeword, which tend to perform better than default models.
2. Check Mute Status & Network URL
If the device shows a red status light and is unresponsive, it may be muted. Make sure the physical mute switch on the device is off (unmuted).
Confirm that Home Assistant’s Local Network URL is correctly configured:
User Profile → Settings → System → Network → Local Network Home Assistant URL
In complex setups (e.g. VLANs, Docker), setting this explicitly (not just 'automatic') often resolves connectivity issues.
3. 3. Adjust Audio Sensitivity & Gain
Use the ESPhome add-on to tweak audio settings for better voice capture:
In Home Assistant, go to Settings → Add-ons → ESPHome and open the Web UI.
Adopt your Voice PE device and open its configuration.yaml.
Add or adjust parameters under voice_assistant:
Increase noise_suppression_level (up to 4) to filter ambient noise.
Boost auto_gain and volume_multiplier to improve sensitivity — but be careful of distortion if set too high.
4. Verify Assist Pipeline and TTS Flow
If completed commands don’t result in an audible response, check the Assist debug logs:
Confirm the full pipeline is completing (STT → Intent → TTS).
If the device lights cycle but there’s no sound, it may be a network or playback issue.
5. Factory reset the device and test again.
6. If you still encounter the same issue: We recommend contacting the Home Assistant Green support team (Nabu Casa) directly. You can reach them via email at green@home-assistant.io, as they have access to the necessary tools to investigate the errors more thoroughly.
Works so well!
