How to Use a Wi-Fi Dimmer Module with a Matter Switch for Smart Lighting
Using a Wi-Fi dimmer module together with a Matter-enabled switch is a powerful way to build a flexible smart lighting setup. This combination gives you physical wall control, smooth dimming, and compatibility with all major smart home platforms — without being locked into a single ecosystem.
In this guide, we’ll explain:
- How the Wi-Fi dimmer module and Matter switch work together
- Why the switch must be set to momentary mode
- How dimming is controlled using the Tuya (Smart Life) app
- How to add the Matter switch to HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa, Tuya, or Home Assistant
- How to set up time-based brightness scenes (e.g. day vs night)
What You’ll Need
To follow this setup guide, you’ll need:
- A Wi-Fi dimmer module
👉 Example: Wi-Fi Smart Dimmer Module – Oz Smart Things - A Matter-enabled smart switch
👉 Example: Matter Smart Switch – Oz Smart Things - The Tuya / Smart Life app (iOS or Android)
Optional but recommended:
- Home Assistant
- Apple HomeKit, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa
Understanding How the System Works
This setup uses two different smart devices, each with a specific role:
Matter Switch
- Provides physical on/off and press/hold control
- Uses the Matter standard
- Can be added directly to:
- Apple HomeKit
- Google Home
- Amazon Alexa
- Tuya / Smart Life
- Home Assistant
Wi-Fi Dimmer Module
- Performs the actual dimming
- Stores and controls brightness levels
- Connects via Wi-Fi to the Tuya ecosystem
- Can also integrate with Google Home, Alexa, or Home Assistant via Tuya
Important: The Matter switch does not store brightness levels. All dimming logic lives inside the Wi-Fi dimmer module.
Step 1: Install the Wi-Fi Dimmer Module
Have a licensed electrician install the Wi-Fi dimmer module according to the wiring diagram supplied with the product.
Typical connections include:
- Live (L)
- Neutral (N)
- Load (to the light)
- Switch input (S / S1 / S2)

Step 2: Set the Matter Switch to Momentary Mode (Critical)
This is the most important step in the entire setup.
Why Momentary Mode Is Required
The Wi-Fi dimmer module is designed to work with a momentary (push-button / bell press) switch, not a traditional toggle switch.
If the switch is left in toggle mode:
- Dimming will not work correctly
- Press-and-hold actions will not be detected
Correct Configuration
In your Matter switch settings, set the output type to “Momentary”. This allows:
- Short press: Light ON / OFF
- Long press: Increase or decrease brightness

Step 3: Add the Matter Switch Using the Matter QR Code
One of the biggest advantages of Matter is how easy setup is. The Matter switch can be added to Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Tuya, or Home Assistant by simply scanning the Matter QR code.
How to Add the Matter Switch
- Open your preferred platform: Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Tuya / Smart Life, or Home Assistant
- Select Add Device or Add Matter Device
- Scan the Matter QR code on the switch or packaging
- Follow the on-screen instructions
Once added, the switch will appear instantly in your chosen platform and can be used for on/off and press/hold actions.
Step 4: Add the Wi-Fi Dimmer Module to the Tuya (Smart Life) App
- Install the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app
- Log in or create an account
- Put the dimmer module into pairing mode (usually by holding its button or power cycling)
- In the app, tap “+” → Lighting → Dimmer
- Connect to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network
Once added, you’ll see the dimmer module with a brightness slider inside the app.
How Dimming Control Works
Dimming can be controlled in three ways:
1. Physical Matter Switch
- Short press: ON / OFF
- Long press: Adjust brightness up or down
- Only works correctly when the switch is set to momentary mode
2. Tuya (Smart Life) App
- Manually set brightness using the slider
- Turn the lights on or off
- Create automations and scenes
⚠️ Note: Brightness levels cannot be set directly from the Matter switch app — they must be set via the Wi-Fi dimmer module in Tuya or Home Assistant.
3. Time-Based Scenes (Recommended)
A popular setup is using Tuya scenes to automatically adjust brightness throughout the day. Example:
- Morning: 100% brightness
- Evening: 60% brightness
- Night: 20% brightness
These scenes run automatically based on time of day and provide a better lighting experience.
Voice Assistant & Smart Home Platform Support
Matter Switch
- Apple HomeKit
- Google Home
- Amazon Alexa
- Tuya
- Home Assistant
- Added by scanning the Matter QR code
Wi-Fi Dimmer Module
- Google Home (via Tuya)
- Amazon Alexa (via Tuya)
